Everyone Serves The Good

the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk.  But you have kept the good wine until now.”  John 2:10

Jesus’ Baptism with Holy Spirit anointing marks the beginning of His ministry. He is 30 years old. We now go with Jesus and His disciples from the Jordan river up to Cana. On the third day after Phillip’s call Jesus goes up to Cana of Galilee to participate in a wedding with His Mother Mary. She initiates His first miracle. Jesus turns the six 30 gallon vats of water into fine wine.

Now the wedding steward assumes that the the bridegroom saved the best for last, yet the servants who drew the water-turned-into-wine know how the miracle happens but they do not speak up.   They are witnesses, yet nothing like this has ever happened before. We focus on the wine steward’s words because here he points out a human condition. We give good first then medocrity is given.

Without faith in Jesus we fail at our best all the way through to the last. Our greatest need is for Jesus to turn our lives into His fine wine of steadfast usefulness for Him. God’s abundant loving goodness responds to our need for Jesus. Faith belief in Jesus miracleously changes us as we are filled with the fine wine of His Spirit, His perfect counsel, His wisdom, and enters into our lives with loving strength to endure with faithfulness. Only Jesus can where we cannot.
