Paul went on also to Derbe and to Lystra, where there was a disciple named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer; but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the believers in Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him; and he took him and had him circumcised because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. Acts 16:1-3

After prayer and being lead by the Holy Spirit ‘they set off in Peace by the believers who had sent them’ (Acts 15:33). In Lystra, Paul discovers Timothy and takes Timothy to be circumcised because the Jews would not have conversed with him without circumcision.

We remember that Paul has the letter in his pocket (Acts 15:23-29) to the Gentiles, whom a few of the Jews have upset by insisting on circumcision (Mosaic Law). The letter says that circumcision is not required. Yet, in order for Paul to bring Timothy into the synagogues to preach Christ with him then the circumcision is necessary, even though Timothy’s mother is of Jewish heritage.

Paul is revving up as he follows the Holy Spirit’s directives. Paul intends to go back to area Christian Churches in order to strengthen believers and increase their numbers. Christ will do this through him. The Holy Spirit will securely direct Paul where to go and where not to go. To God be the Glory.
