They’d Never Heard Of Holy Spirit

Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the One who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— altogether there were about twelve of them. Acts 19:4-7

In Ephesus Paul found disciples of Jesus who had never heard there is a Holy Spirit! They had been Baptized into John the Baptist’s Baptism and now Paul Baptizes them in the Name of Jesus Christ and then lays his Holy hands on their head and the Holy Spirit anoints them with Christ’s Holy Presence.

My friend, if you are not Baptized into Jesus Christ and had the laying on of Holy hands then the full Baptism is not yet yours. Now I am a believer in both adult and infant Baptism. I’ve been asked why we would Baptize an infant because, they say, the infant has not sinned. These folks believe Baptism washes away sin. Paul shows you that Baptism is for the receiving of the Holy Spirit combined with the laying on of Holy hands. When Paul Baptizes with blessed water and then lays on his Holy hands upon their heads then they speak in tongues and prophesy. The Holy Spirit has anointed them.

Holy Spirit will cause you to joyously speak of Jesus Christ’s activity in your life and Spirit will use your words and actions to bring others to Christ. Not everyone will welcome your words about Jesus so do as Paul does: ‘He [Paul] entered the synagogue and for three months spoke out boldly, and argued persuasively about the Kingdom of God. When some stubbornly refused to believe and spoke evil of The Way [of Jesus Christ] before the congregation, he left them, taking the disciples with him, and argued daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.‘ Acts 19:8-10
